The Cottage in the Wood saves Ospreys in the forest!
The Cottage in the Wood has raised over £1000 to help protect breeding Ospreys in Whinlatter Forest.
The Keswick based hotel has asked all of its guests to each donate £1 towards protecting this endangered species.
These beautiful birds are an endangered species, and extremely rare in England after having been hunted to extinction by the Victorians. Now they have returned to the Lake District, and need ‘round the clock’ protection to ensure their survival. Liam and Kath Berney of The Cottage in the Wood were so inspired by the birds that they decided to fundraise to look after them.
£1 is asked from each guest, and so far every single customer has been more than happy to help. Liam and Kath tell everyone about the Ospreys, and encourage their guests to go and see them at the Whinlatter visitor centre.
The couple were motivated to start fundraising in this way as members of the Tourism and Conservation Partnership, which asks its 250 strong business membership to support conservation in the county.
Liam says: “This scheme is the best thing we have ever done in terms of fundraising for conservation here at The Cottage in the Wood. Working with the Tourism and Conservation Partnership showed us that it is possible to make a real difference to our local area, and gives our guests a real ‘feel good’ factor. It took us a year before making the leap to fundraising in this way. If we could do
