£50 and provide for the repair of one metre of upland path. The
sheer number of visitors to the Lake District leaves a mark on the very
same landscape that they have come to visit. Over time, grass is
compacted by foot, horseshoe and tyre, and worn away. The traditional
Lakeland weather (rain!) then starts to wash the soil away, down into
the bottom of the valleys. This extra soil washes into the streams, and
ends up in lakes where the siltation causes havoc for fish and other
species. |

The ‘Fix the Fells’ project is a £5 million
scheme to repair the erosion scars which have developed over the years,
and to make sure that these scars are prevented in the future. The work
being done aims to prevent loss of grass and soil by designing and
creating paths that reduce the amount of wear and tear on the
surrounding landscape.
Donate £50 to Fix the Fells and the Heritage
Lottery Fund will match your donation with £100. So by buying a
£50 conservation gift you will provide money for the repair of
one metre of upland path.
