Warcop Water Voles

Once common and widespread, the animal that inspired the character 'Ratty' from The Wind in the Willows is in danger. Water voles have all but disappeared from Cumbria’s countryside, the only populations that have been found in the wild are in tiny burns in the North Pennines around Alston. A new scheme undertaken by the Cumbria Water Vole Project aims to reintroduce water voles to a site near Brough, following successful water vole reintroductions in the South of England.

They need to raise funds to pay for the costs of breeding the voles in captivity. By taking a small number of underweight youngsters from the wild we have avoided causing unnecessary impacts on native populations, and they are now happily breeding in a captive breeding centre prior to release into the wild. It is hoped that over 100 young voles will be released. Funds raised will cover the cost of food, labour and transportation.
