Formed in 1934 the Friends of the Lake District works to protect and enhance the special qualities of the distinctive and inspirational landscapes of the Lake District and Cumbria.

The county's landscape is a unique blend of physical and cultural characteristics. It possesses a diversity of environments: spectacular mountains and rugged fells; pastoral and wooded valleys; and numerous lakes, tarns and rivers, many of which are of national and international importance.

We are a membership organisation with supporters throughout Britain and abroad. We work alongside other organisations and local groups to achieve a stronger recognition of the contribution of landscapes to the well-being of the nation and of the need to protect them from the effects of damaging developments.

We promote research to find sustainable solutions to countryside problems and encourage communities to take an active involvement in improving their local landscape by grant-aiding environmental projects. We represent the Council for the Protection of Rural England thoughout Cumbria.

• A healthy natural environment: England’s natural environment will be conserved and enhanced.
• Enjoyment of the natural environment: more people enjoying, understanding and acting to improve, the natural environment, more often.
• Sustainable use of the natural environment: the use and management of the natural environment is more sustainable.
• A secure environmental future: decisions which collectively secure the future of the natural environment.
