Formed in 1934 the Friends of the Lake District works to protect and enhance the special qualities of the distinctive and inspirational landscapes of the Lake District and Cumbria.
The county's landscape is a unique blend of physical and cultural characteristics. It possesses a diversity of environments: spectacular mountains and rugged fells; pastoral and wooded valleys; and numerous lakes, tarns and rivers, many of which are of national and international importance.
We are a membership organisation with supporters throughout Britain and abroad. We work alongside other organisations and local groups to achieve a stronger recognition of the contribution of landscapes to the well-being of the nation and of the need to protect them from the effects of damaging developments.
We promote research to find sustainable solutions to countryside problems and encourage communities to take an active involvement in improving their local landscape by grant-aiding environmental projects. We represent the Council for the Protection of Rural England thoughout Cumbria.

Natural England works for people, places and nature, to enhance biodiversity, landscapes and wildlife in rural, urban, coastal and marine areas; promote access, recreation and public well-being; and contribute to the way natural resources are managed so that they can be enjoyed now and in the future.
Natural England works towards the delivery of four strategic outcomes, which together deliver on our purpose to conserve, enhance and manage the natural environment for the benefit of current and future generations.
• A healthy natural environment: England’s natural environment will be conserved and enhanced.
• Enjoyment of the natural environment: more people enjoying, understanding and acting to improve, the natural environment, more often.
• Sustainable use of the natural environment: the use and management of the natural environment is more sustainable.
• A secure environmental future: decisions which collectively secure the future of the natural environment.

The Lake District National Park Authority is an independent local authority and part of the local government in the Lake District. It does some, but not all, of the work that is done by the County and District Councils outside the National Park. These other councils also have an important role to play inside the National Park.
The Lake District National Park Authority is the local government body established to conserve and enhance the Lake District's natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural heritage; and promote the public's understanding and enjoyment of the National Park's special qualities. LDNPA try to ensure that developments and activities are not harmful, to encourage responsible countryside access, to inform and educate visitors and local people about conservation issues and foster the economic and social well-being of the local communities. |

Hall is a magnificent Elizabethan mansion built around a 13th Century
pele tower, which was expanded and rebuilt towards the end of the 16th
Century. The hall contains a collection of Jacobean furniture, fine
paintings, the earliest English patchwork and many other beautiful
objects. The world-famous award winning gardens were laid out in 1694.
The topiary, beech hedges and colourful seasonal beds create a stunning

and columns reminiscent of monstrous chessmen.
